A seven-acre greenbelt harbors the SCCO campus that was completed in 1973 with the assistance of a matching grant from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. A new academic center and multi-level parking structurewere completed in 1998.
The newest building on campus, the Richard L. Hopping Academic Center, houses the M.B. Ketchum Memorial Library; a 300-seat lecture hall that converts to three 100-seat classrooms; a student computer lab; seminar and study rooms; a fitness center; a shipping and receiving center; Campus Operations; campus storage; and an adjoining multi-level parking structure for 340 vehicles.
The M.B. Ketchum Memorial Library on the second level of the academic center, provides the resources needed by today's student to combine the knowledge gained through experiences in the classroom and clinical environments. The 11,616 square-foot, state-of-the-art library offers computer access to databases and information resources, and individual and group study areas. The Library houses a growing collection of over 10,000 books in vision science and related areas; 6,500 bound journals; 300 current journal subscriptions; and over 500 audiovisual titles. Library services include on-line computer reference service; author
assistance; current awareness journal service; and interlibrary loans, self-service copy machines and an audiotape duplicator. An SCCO-California State University, Fullerton, reciprocal arrangement grants borrowing privileges to library patrons of both schools. The Library is open seven days per week during the academic year. A student computer lab is adjacent to the Library.
The Basic and Clinical Sciences Building provides research and teaching laboratories for anatomy, physiology, neurosciences, pharmacology, ophthalmic optics, visual sciences, contact lenses, and pre-clinic. This building also houses classrooms, seminar rooms, a student computer lab, faculty offices, an audio visual center, and an administrative computer center.
The Roger C. Wilson Administration Building houses a reception area, administrative and business offices, two large lecture halls equipped with state-of-the-art projection and computer systems, and a conference room. Adjacent to the Administration Building is the Ernest A. Hutchinson Memorial Amphitheater where a number of annual events are held including the Commencement Exercise in May, and the Honors Convocation held in the Fall.
The Student Center includes the Student Lounge, the Campus Store and Faculty offices.
The Eye Care Center (ECC), a 25,500 square-foot clinic, serves as both a teaching facility and major community health service center. It provides access for two
million people, living within a 25-mile radius, to one of the finest eye/vision care clinical facilities in the United States. Basic vision examinations, contact lens services, orthoptics, vision and learning disability therapy, pediatric vision care, ocular disease diagnosis, special testing, low vision rehabilitation, and eyeware dispensing are among the services provided. Ample parking is available for patients visiting the Eye Care Center.
The Patricia Hopping Commons now proudly connects the original and the new campus buildings. Surrounded by a seating wall on three sides and boasting a built-in barbecue, partially financed by several SCCO class gifts, the redefined space provides a spot for quiet reflection and study, or a fun-filled campus event.
Esthetically enhancing the SCCO campus are four original sculptures designed and created by SCCO Trustee and Professor Emeritus, Harry W. Bloom, O.D., D.O.S., Class of 1949. The sculptures are entitled, Oculi Mens (located in the Richard L. Hopping Academic Center); Oculus Penetrans (located in the Administration Building); Oculus Mutandus (located in the Richard L. Hopping Academic Center); and E=MC2 (located in the President's Office).
SCCO owns and operates a major teaching and community clinic in Los Angeles. The Optometric Center of Los Angeles(OCLA) is located at 3916 South Broadway. It was constructed and fully equipped in 1972 with the aid of a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service. OCLA's services mirror nearly all of those provided at the Eye Care Center. All campus and clinical facilities provide access for the handicapped.
