VWI and SCCO Launch Online CE Program

            VWI has a long tradition of supporting independent ophthalmic practitioners with professional education programs.  We are pleased to announce our new education partnership with the Southern California College of Optometry, which offers online learning to earn CE credits toward licensure renewal.

            Today many state boards of optometry accept online credits toward licensure renewal.  The California State Board of Optometry requires 50 CE units every two years and will accept a maximum of 20 hours of CE earned through accredited self-study courses.  The VWI/SCCO online programs are COPE-approved and are accepted upon documented completion as one hour of credit for one hour of self study earned.

            The VWI /SCCO online learning partnership began over two years ago, when Dr. Joe Mallinger, VWI President and CEO, approached the College to explore an online CE partnership.  Combining the strengths of SCCO in optometric education and VWI’s national optometric customer base, the plan for this new educational opportunity was put into action.   The College took responsibility for curriculum development, with VWI establishing the technology infrastructure including website design and electronic registration.

            Whether it’s called distance learning, online learning or virtual classes — this method of earning CE credits offers many advantages, among them time management and flexibility.  Online learning is without a doubt the most convenient way to complete CE requirements and receive educational material in a flexible format to fit the schedule of the individual practitioner. With online learning, optometric professionals can enjoy the freedom of working at their own pace.

            Currently SCCO offers three online courses, each providing two hours of credit.  Additional courses will be added throughout the year with a goal of ultimately offering up to 10 courses (20 credits) at any given time. Each VWI/SCCO on-line course will remain in the system for a one year period. 

            VWI members will receive a 10% discount on all courses, and for added convenience, they will be billed through their VWI billing account.
