| Dr. Jaanus received a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical School. Following graduation, she was an NIH-post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology at Downstate Medical School and thereafter joined the faculty of the State University of New York, State College of Optometry as an assistant professor and later became chairperson of its Basic Sciences Department. Subsequently, she became a faculty member at the Southern California College of Optometry where she served as an associate and full professor for nearly two decades. From 1994 to 2001 she was Professor and Chairperson of the Biological Sciences Department at the State University of New York, State College of Optometry. In 2001 she returned to the Southern California College of Optometry where she presently teaches ocular pharmacology.
She is the associate editor and contributor to the highly acclaimed textbook Clinical Ocular Pharmacology and has contributed to several other textbooks. She also serves on the editorial panel of Ophthalmic Drug Facts, a handbook on ocular drug utilization. She was a member of the Optometric Advisory Board of Akorn Pharmaceuticals, and for more than a decade served on the examination construction committee of the National Board of Optometric Examiners in Optometry (NBEO). Dr. Jaanus has testified for Optometric Diagnostic Drug legislation in 14 states and for TPA drug legislation in New Jersey, Florida and California. She has served in an advisory capacity on Optometric drug utilization and education to several State Boards of Optometry, the Board of Medical Quality Assurance in California and the New York State Education Department. She was the chairperson of the State College of Optometry ad hoc committee to oversee Credentialing of TPA legislation in New York State. Her research interests include autonomic and endocrine pharmacology. She has contributed to numerous articles in this area of research. She is a recognized lecturer in Ocular Pharmacology and has presented at numerous State and National conferences. Dr. Jaanus was elected to the membership of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), and is a member of the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO). She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO). She is a recipient of the Paul Yarwood Award, the highest honor given by the California Optometric Association. She is listed in American Men and Women of Science and Who is Who in the West. In 1994, Dr. Jaanus was elected as a Distinguished Scholar in Optometry by the National Academies of Practice. In May, 1997, Dr. Jaanus was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters from the Southern California College of Optometry. |
