Posted: Fullerton, CA, May 17, 2013—- Highlighting the one-hundred and ninth Commencement of the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University will be the recognition of 99 Doctor of Optometry degree candidates; the delivery of the Commencement Address by the President-Elect of the American Optometric Association (AOA); the presentation of the College’s prestigious Distinguished Service Award; conferring of an honorary degree; and the announcement of the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. In addition, recognition of the College’s first candidate for the Master of Science degree, and the acknowledgment of 40 optometrists who have successfully completed one-year residency programs will also occur. The Commencement Exercise will be held, Thursday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m., on the University’s Fullerton campus.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, April 12, 2013—- Marshall B. Ketchum University is Southern California’s newest healthcare education institution. An outgrowth and expansion of the educational offerings of the 109-year-old Southern California College of Optometry, the University will provide a diversity of healthcare training opportunities in an environment focused on interprofessional education. The first program to be added is the School of Physician Assistant Studies, which is anticipated to open in 2014 and is currently accepting student applications.

The Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), voted at its February meeting to reaffirm the accreditation of SCCO through 2022.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, February 21, 2013—- The Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), has named key administrators and faculty to its new School of Physician Assistant Studies. They are: Medical Director Daniel May, M.D.; Assistant Professor and Clinical Coordinator Don Ragsdale, MPAS, PA-C; and Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator Deon Kidd, DHSc, MPH, PA-C, MSHPE. The three clinicians and educators join Associate Professor, Assistant Dean and Founding Director of the School of Physician Assistant Studies Teresa Thetford, PA-C, RNP, MS, as the core group responsible for establishing the program.

On that day in 1973, the College moved to a newly built campus at the corner of Yorba Linda Boulevard and Associated Road from downtown Los Angeles where it was founded in 1904.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, February 5, 2013—- Vision screenings were recently provided to 194 patients at local armories serving as homeless shelters. Overall, 40 optometric interns, faculty, administrators and volunteers from the Southern California College of Optometry participated at the clinics set-up to provide health care to the underserved. The armories hosted the clinics on two consecutive Saturday nights, January 26 and February 2, and 148 pairs of glasses were prescribed.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, January 28, 2013—- Optometric Educator, Clinician and Administrator Stan Woo, O.D., M.S., F.A.A.O., has been appointed Dean of the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). Dr. Woo has been the Chief of the Vision Rehabilitation Service, Founding Director of the UEI Center for Sight Enhancement, and Director of the Residency in Low Vision Rehabilitation at the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO). He will begin his new duties at SCCO in July 2013.

SCCO Assistant Professor Eunice Myung Lee, O.D., Class of 1999 and Wisconsin Optometrist Kellye J. Knueppel, O.D., Class of 1993, will be part of the team providing vision and eye care to the 2,000 participating athletes.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, January 24, 2013—- Thirty-three boys learned first-hand about science-based careers through Adventures in Science a collaborative program of the Southern California College of Optometry, Raytheon and the Fullerton School District. The science day began at Raytheon where the youngsters participated in technology-focused games. They were transported after lunch to SCCO’s campus for a presentation on optometry and participation in hands-on workshops.

They included Assistant Professor Pat Yoshinaga, O.D., M.P.H., who was awarded Diplomate status in the section of Public Health and Environmental Vision. Diplomates are Fellows of the AAO who have demonstrated their skill in a specific area. Recognition as a Diplomate in Public Health and Environmental Vision is awarded for successfully demonstrating knowledge, skills and participation in public health or community optometry activities in their work.

More than 1,100 athletes will gather Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9 in Irvine and Fountain Valley to compete, as well as take part in the Healthy Athletes Village.

Ninety-three works of art by 44 blind, legally blind and visually impaired artists make-up the exhibit and are now on display at SCCO’s Eye Care Center located at 2575 Yorba Linda Blvd., Fullerton, CA.

Over 100 Alumni Reconnect at AAO
Fullerton, CA, October 26, 2012: The American Academy of Optometry (AAO) Conference held in Phoenix welcomed hundreds of faculty, students and alumni. Under sunny skies, the AAO Conference took over downtown Phoenix. Friday night, the Cassidy Room at the Hyatt Regency was packed with SCCO alumni and friends at the official SCCO hosted reception. Over 100 alumni attended the event with President Alexander and SCCO’s First Lady Carol Alexander.

SCCO volunteers included 226 optometric interns, 15 Doctors of Optometry all members of SCCO’s faculty, and eight staff members.

Posted: Fullerton, CA, September 10, 2012—- While attending the 2012 Vision Expo West, SCCO alumni, family and friends held a special reception at the Celebrity Cars Lounge of the Dal Toro Ristorante in the Palazzo Hotel. Over 80 folks joined in the fun of seeing some truly exotic cars in an environment only Las Vegas can offer. Alumni came from all over the United States including New Jersey, Arizona, Washington, Nevada, California and more. When guests were not viewing the cars, many enjoyed a special presentation sharing some great photos of alumni, the campus and the latest at SCCO. But most of all, it was a great opportunity for everyone to meet and greet President Kevin Alexander and First Lady, Dr. Carol Alexander. You could really sense that SCCO was the main event in the room.
