Vision Care Assistant Program at SCCO Accepting Applications

Posted:  Fullerton, CA, April 5, 2012—- The Vision Care Assistant (VCA) Program at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), is now accepting applications for its class starting in August 2012.  The nine-month certificate program is designed to teach assistants the skills required to help vision care doctors provide a wide range of services in the eye care field including office management, patient care assisting and optical dispensing.

Building Community Service – Vision Screenings Provided to Migrant Workers

Posted:  Fullerton, CA, March 13, 2012—- A health fair for migrant workers provided an opportunity for community service by students and faculty of the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO).  Vision screenings were provided to 80 children and adults at a health fair organized by Latino Health Access and held in Thermal, CA, on March 4.

Dr. Howard Walton Remembered

Posted:  Fullerton, CA, March 13, 2012—- Former SCCO Associate Professor Howard N. Walton, O.D., D.O.S., (photo ca. 1965) passed away on February 25.  Dr. Walton, born on September 2, 1917, was 94.  A Memorial Service was held on March 5 in Whittier, California.

Gifted Teacher Passes Away

Posted: Fullerton, CA, March 13, 2012—- SCCO Professor Emeritus Walter Wm. Chase, O.D., M.S., passed away, February 20, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Dr. Chase served as an SCCO faculty member for 38 years, 1966 – 2004 and was a gifted teacher; his primary interests were Ocular Motility and Optics of the Eye. In addition he served in numerous capacities with the American Academy of Optometry.  A Memorial Service was held on February 25, in Irvine, CA.

Jones, J.D.; Distinguished Philanthropist Kathryn T. McCarty; and two awards for Distinguished Corporate Sponsor were presented to Snyder Langston and Alcon.

Visually Impaired Children to Receive Life-Changing Assistive Technology

Posted: Fullerton, CA, January 24, 2012—- Five underserved, visually impaired children from Southern California will receive life-changing assistive technology thanks to the efforts of three organizations.  The children, ranging in age from five to 15, have severe conditions ranging from glaucoma to optic dysplasia and brain damage.  They are all patients at the Walls Low Vision Rehabilitation Center at the Southern California College of Optometry’s (SCCO’s), Eye Care Center in Fullerton, CA.

Sports Vision Screening

Posted:  Fullerton, CA, January 10, 2012—- Optometric interns and faculty from the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), participated in a sports vision screening for athletes at neighboring CSU Fullerton. Twenty-three SCCO optometric interns, SCCO VP for Interprofessional Affairs John Nishimoto, O.D., M.B.A., and Huntington Beach Optometrist Bronson Hamada, O.D., screened 40 baseball and 25 softball players at the January 9 event.

LA Supervisor Recognizes SCCO CareNow Volunteers

Posted:  Fullerton, CA, December 8, 2011—- Members of the SCCO Family were among those recognized for their volunteer efforts at CareNow L.A., the largest free healthcare event in the United States.  Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles County, Second District (second from left), recognized three individuals from SCCO during the meeting of the Board of Supervisors on December 6.  They were (l-r):  Clinic Director, Optometric Center of Los Angeles Mark E. Nakano, O.D.; Manager, Special Clinic Programs Michele Whitecavage; and Vice President of Interprofessional Affairs John H. Nishimoto, O.D., M.B.A.

Toys Donated During SCCO Spirit Week

Posted: Fullerton, CA, December 1, 2011—- Toys, toys and more toys have been donated by Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) students, faculty, administrators and staff to the Spark of Love Toy Drive sponsored by Southern California Fire Fighters and KABC-TV.  Four fire fighters from the City of Fullerton’s Fire Station 5, which borders the SCCO Campus, were on-hand to collect the toys at the College’s Spirit Week Barbeque on Tuesday night, November 29.
