Class of 2013 Begins Doctoral Program

The Class of 2013 arrived for Orientation on August 14. They included 31 men and 69 women. Seventy-one students are from California. Eighteen other states are represented, including Alaska (2), Arizona (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (2), Iowa (2), Maryland (1), Montana (1), Nevada (3), New Mexico (1), New York (1), North Dakota (1), South Dakota (1), Texas (1), Utah (1), Virginia (1), Washington (4), and Wisconsin (1). Three students are from Canada.

The mean GPA for the class was 3.44 and the mean OAT score was 341 (85th percentile). No one had below a 3.00 overall GPA or a 3.00 prerequisite GPA. All students have completed their bachelor degrees and one student has completed a master’s degree. Students earned their degrees from 45 different colleges and universities. Fifty-eight students received their degree from the University of California system. The number one school represented is UCLA with 17 students. Second is UC Irvine with 11. Additional colleges with more than one representative include UC San Diego (7), UC Berkeley (7), UC Davis (7), UC Santa Barbara (5), UC Riverside (2), UC Santa Cruz (2), San Francisco State (2), USC (3), BYU-Idaho (2), and University of Nevada, Reno (2).

The class includes two sons of alumni and the daughter of an ICO alumna. This is a very interesting and talented group of individuals, and not just academically. Over a quarter of the class has 6 plus years experience with piano and/or violin, including 6 with over 12 years of experience. Athletically, they have competed in multiple sports including dance, triathlons, tae kwon do, figure skating and hunter jumping.
