SCCO President Kevin Alexander addresses the prospective students
Happening over Easter weekend, SCCO’s Spring Admissions Open House (SAOH) was a huge success! An event where prospective students, at all levels of interest in optometry, learn more about the profession, our program and especially, get a blast of enthusiasm to help them stay focused on their goal ahead – to become an SCCO student.
SAOH is the biggest event produced by the Office of Student Affairs and it is held only once a year. Dr. Jane Ann Munroe along with American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) Trustee Marc Kallal, Class of 2013 and Trustee Elect Brian Park, Class of 2014, facilitated a program including speakers, lab demonstrations, and campus tours.
After a welcome from Marc and Brian on behalf of the AOSA and SCCO President Kevin Alexander, O.D., Ph.D., a presentation was provided by Dr. Munroe with an update about the profession and tips about the admissions process. This year’s featured speaker was Dr. Sunny Sanders giving a talk entitled, “Ocular Prosthetics – My Focus.” SCCO Student Intern Class Representatives Stephanie Woo, Class of 2011, Chad Stockert, Class of 2012, Kristine Lee, Class of 2013 and Jacqueline Vu, Class of 2014, gave talks about their experiences specific to each year’s curriculum. All in all, about 40 SCCO Student Intern Volunteers were involved to host more than 270 guests.
"I call it the 'Optometric Pep Rally,'" says Dr. Munroe, "because the mission of the program is to get potential students fired up and ready to take on the challenge of being a pre-optometry student and launching a successful admissions strategy. Everybody was welcome – parents, siblings and grandparents."
