Cornea and Contact Lens - Eye Care Clinic (SCCO) '01-'02
  1. Briefly describe the patient population and types of disorders that routinely present at your clinic. Also, provide the typical number of patient encounters you have in a day.

    60% Caucasian
    15% Hispanic
    15% Asian
    10% African-American

    The most frequent disease seen is Keratoconus (70%). Post-surgical (RK, PKP. . .), pediatric, and orthokeratology are also encountered.

  2. Describe other activities that you are available to participate in besides direct patient care. (i.e. Grand rounds, internal lectures, interaction with other health professionals, staffing of student interns)

    Grand Rounds at West LA VA or Sepulveda VA. Also, grand rounds at Jules Stein Eye Institute.

    Staffing of students — minimal initially but half a day for the last 6 months.

  3. Briefly describe the setting of the clinic and the surrounding area.

    Located in a suburb of Orange County (Fullerton), which has many colleges. The Eye Care Clinic is located across the street from Cal. State Fullerton.

  4. What are some strengths of the program and what areas do you feel need improvement.

    Strengths: Direct patient care of difficult contact lens cases. Emphasis on contact lens modification. Faculty supervision is sufficient and are available for consultation. Flexibility of the program allows the resident to choose the emphasis: direct patient care, research, staffing/teaching. . . .

  5. Briefly describe the geographic location/area of your residency program (what should one expect).

    Small suburb (Fullerton) provides easy access to all areas of the large metropolitan areas of both Orange County and Los Angeles.

  6. Has your residency thus far been what you expected?

    Yes, but some more experience with bifocal contact lenses next quarter is anticipated.

  7. What were your reasons for applying for a residency and have they been addressed?

To become proficient in fitting specialty contact lenses in order to provide this very important service to my patients.
