1. Briefly describe the patient population and types of disorders that routinely present at your clinic. Also, provide the typical number of patient encounters you have in a day.

The patient population is about 40% Caucasian, 40% Hispanic, 10% African American, and 10% Indian/other. The most frequent disease seen is Keratoconus — probably about 70% of patients. Post-surgical (RK/PKP) corneas, pediatric and orthokeratology are also frequent.

2. Describe other activities that you are available to participate in besides direct patient care. (i.e. Grand rounds, internal lectures, interaction with other health professionals, staffing of student interns)

Grand Rounds with Drs. Bright, Ilsen and Ferruci at the West LA VA or Sepulveda VA.

Also, Grand Rounds at Jules Stein (UCLA) Eye Institute

3. Briefly describe the setting of the clinic (hospital, co-management. . .etc).

Located in a suburb of Orange County, Fullerton has many colleges. The Eye Care Clinic is located across the street from Cal State Fullerton.

4. What are some strengths of the program and what areas do you feel could be enhanced.

-Direct patient care of challenging contact lens cases

-Emphasis on contact lens modification

-Faculty supervision is very adequate and they are usually available for consultation (as needed)

-Flexibility of the program allows the resident to choose emphasis — eg. Direct patient care vs. research vs. staffing/teaching.

5. Briefly describe the geographic location/area of your residency program (what should one expect).

-Small suburb (Fullerton) provides easy access to all areas of the large metropolitan areas of both Orange County and Los Angeles.

6. Has your residency thus far been what you expected?

Yes. A very broad range of patient encounters.

7. What were your reasons for applying for a residency and have they been addressed?

To become proficient in fitting specialty contact lenses in order to provide this very important service to our patients.
